Single crystals of KMnO4 that I managed to extract from a large cluster of crystals resulted from cooling down a hot saturated solution to room temperature. The compound seems to crystallize either as octahedral prisms (similar to alums) or long, flat needles with a beautiful golden metallic luster. The octahedral crystal is small, only about 2mm in size, while the needle is roughly 1cm long. All images were taken with my shitty phone camera. Also, despite being a relatively common chemical, I really haven't seen anyone grow crystals of KMnO4 yet for some reasons. I did try to grow a large single crystal from this seed, but failed miserably when the solution somehow dissolved the fishing line I used to tie the seed down.

Hello everyone, here is one of my crystals of copper formate. I really like its color and how it turned out, thought I might share it with you. Down below I wrote a short procedure how I made it.

First, I made basic copper carbonate by dissolving copper sulfate in water and adding baking soda to it. Then filtered basic copper carbonate off, washed it couple of times with water and left to dry. After that it was weighted and transferred to a beaker and reacted with slight excess of formic acid, to make copper formate. Then I added urea to the solution. Molar ratio between copper formate and urea is 1:2.

When small crystals started to form, I tied one to a fishing line and suspended it in solution. Growth time was about eight months, and it is 4 cm long, 3.5 cm wide and 4 cm tall. The shape of the crystal is unusual, I was expecting cubic crystal shape but instead it has a shape of an octahedron.

i just used some old asf paint stripper that had a lot of probably not very good hydrocarbons in it. according to a data sheet its a mix of benzene toluene and xylenes. and with rough math and weighing 100ml of it it kinda works.
